Frequently Asked Questions

What do I wear to classes?

You train in the clothing you are most comfortable in, minimum shoes, sweats or shorts, and t-shirt; ideally you would train in what you would wear in your everyday environment.  There are no uniforms to purchase and no belts to tie.  Remember in real life you will not be wearing a martial arts uniform and walking bare foot.

Will I need any equipment?

A mouth guard, groin protection (e.g. hockey cup) for men and a sports bra for women will be required right away. Later on, you may want to get yourself some knee and elbow pads, shin guards, forearm pads and boxing gloves as we train about 70 – 80% full contact in order to simulate real life.  Remember the way you train will dictate the way you respond to a real life attack.  Protective equipment is provided but it is always recommended to bring your own.

I have no experience in any fighting system and am out of shape, does that matter?

No experience or physical conditioning is required to attend a Reality Based class; you will get in shape progressively from attending classes.  You are free to push yourself as much as you want; everyone works according to their own limits.  Reality Based training is excellent for persons with a physical impairment as you will learn how to modify your defense response based on YOUR abilities.

How does Reality Based Personal Protection differ from Martial Arts?

In brief, we keep the martial and take out the art. Most martial arts have rules, codes and a spiritual aspect along with rituals. This is all very good for character building, especially in children. Reality Based Personal Protection has only one concern: to teach you how to survive no matter what you have to do. There are no rules, no competitions, and no concern for how it looks. Martial arts rarely teach defences against real, random attacks, knives, firearms, clubs, multiple opponents…on the other hand, this is all that REDZONE teaches, all from a legal use of force perspective incorporating Pre and Post Conflict training.

Also, in martial arts, techniques are the most important aspect; they are passed from one teacher to the next unchanged for centuries. Reality Based Personal Protection is about concepts and principles more than it is about techniques, similar to how one learns first aid. We train people to find the proper solution to a wide range of problems using the realistic concepts and principles.

Will I get injured practicing Reality Based Personal Protection?

All activities involving combat and full-contact exercises have an inherent risk of injuries. However the instructors are highly trained in safety measures and injuries are no more frequent than in Hockey or martial arts. However, the chances that you will inflict serious injuries to anyone who is trying to hurt you or your family are very high!

Students are mostly men…is Reality Based Personal Protection suitable for women?

Reality Based Personal Protection is not only suitable for women; it is the best self-defence system as it will teach you how to realistically survive an assault by a much bigger and stronger opponent.  As a woman, you will not only learn specific rape prevention techniques but you will be encouraged to use your natural instincts in order to become more situationally aware.  You will also learn how to become more aggressive, more aware, and your chances of surviving an assault will increase drastically.

How far ahead do I need to register for a class?

Class sizes are limited depending on the level of instruction this way whether you’re at the Fundamental, Intermediate or Advanced Levels you get quality instruction.

What ages do you teach?

At REDZONE, due to the nature and seriousness of the Reality Based self defense training material the age ranges from 18 years and upwards.  In regards to females however, with the accompaniment of a parent or guardian, 16 years of age is the youngest age accepted; the reason for this is because females face different dangers than males and this starts at an earlier age.

For the Commando Krav Maga training the minimum age for males and females is 15 years of age.

Is the Women’s self defense course different than the Co-Ed Course?

Yes, the Women’s self defense course is tailored to Women due to the differing nature of the unique worries and concerns that are generally faced by women.

What style of martial art do you teach?

Reality Based self defense and Commando Krav Maga are not a formal martial art style, they are considered systems of personal protection.  In general Reality Based self defense training teach effective and memorable skills.  These skills are already genetically wired and based on gross motor movements.  Simplicity is key to Safety.

Do you have to sign up for a minimum number of lessons?

No.  Although the courses are structured in three distinct levels, Fundamental, Intermediate and Advanced, you can simply sign up by the month and train as often or as little as you want.  You will receive the same instruction as those who opted for the respective training packages.

Do you offer discounts for family and friends?

Yes.  Discounts are offered if you were to bring a family member or friend who signs up for training at REDZONE.  This discount is discussed on an individual basis.

I have an injury will this stop me from being able to train?

No.  If you suffer from a chronic injury or disability it is even more important to learn what you are able to do to defend yourself.  REDZONE encourages the student to only do what they feel they are capable of doing.  Besides you may really surprise yourself with what you are capable of doing.

What if I have never trained martial arts or I’m not athletic?

We welcome beginners and all skill levels into any of our classes.  There are no egos and all we ask is that you give it your best.  During class if you have to take a break or get a drink please do so.  Also, please notify your instructor of any injuries that you may have, the techniques and drills will be modified to your workout to prevent further injury.  Compared to other fitness programs, you may find that our classes can be a little more challenging both physically and mentally.  With time and regular class attendance you will become proficient in the necessary skills to achieve your ultimate fitness and self defense goal.

I’ve been training martial arts my whole life, what can you provide me that is different?

If your training has taught you 1) what are the only two reasons to fight and; 2) what are the three fights that you will encounter, then REDZONE doesn’t have anything to offer you.  However, if you are not able to answer these two questions then REDZONE definitely has something for you.
